Symbolism has been an important aspect throughout world history. From
religions, to alchemy, even the earliest form of writing was made from nothing
more than basic symbols. America’s foundation is no exception to this and is full
of various symbols and several of them center around the concepts of freedom and
liberty. The bald eagle was chosen not only as a symbol for its strength but because
there is nothing that embodies the idea of freedom more than an eagle soaring on
the wind. Independence Hall is not just a building but stands as the place where for
the first time in world history a new government was forge that gave more
freedoms, liberties and power to its citizenry than to itself. The Liberty Bell that
originally hung in Independence Hall developed a large crack and shows how
fragile freedom can be. The Statue of Liberty though given as a gift from France
was to stand as a beacon and shine the light of freedom to the rest of the world.
The American flag is a symbol of liberty, freedom and of the spirit of patriotism.
We have seen several of these symbols come under attack from statues being torn
down, names of our founders being removed from buildings and even talks of
banning the American flag. Symbols are not to be worshiped but are there to
remind us of certain ideals. That is why we are seeing these attacks so that idea of
freedom and liberty can be replaced. We the People stand as the most important
symbol for America because we are its foundation and we decide if the enemies of
freedom succeed.
